White Way Gets a ‘Green’ Theater

Henry Miller’s Theater, the first newly built Broadway house in more than 20 years — and the first so-called green theater on the Great White Way — has completed major construction and is set to open in September with Roundabout Theater Company’s revival of the musical “Bye Bye Birdie.”






"Green" renovations include:

Recycled materials were used in the wall panels and baseboard; waterless urinals are used in the men’s washroom to reduce consumption of potable water; and local materials were used in the marble flooring and countertops, among other touches.

Inside the Mexican Suitcase

When the three weathered cardboard boxes — known collectively, and cinematically, as the Mexican suitcase — arrived at theInternational Center of Photography more than a year ago, one of the first things a conservator did was bend down and sniff the film coiled inside, fearful of a telltale acrid odor, a sign of nitrate decay.

But the rolls turned out to be in remarkably good shape despite being almost untouched for 70 years. And so began a painstaking process of unfurling, scanning and trying to make sense of some 4,300 negatives taken

 byRobert Capa, Gerda Taro and David Seymour during the Spanish Civil War, groundbreaking work that was long thought to be lost but resurfaced several years ago in Mexico City.

man it has been a while since i have posted one of these things... the end of the semester is always the busiest for a science major since every professor feels the need to be handed a bajillion page paper that they will probably never read...

i love his landscape shots, and a quote of his especially caught my eye... "For me a landscape of trees, or a row of buildings, depict where I've been and who I am to a certain degree."  so maybe a landscape could be a self portrait... i guess the question becomes what landscape?... also LOVE the use of natural light... non of that flash mumbo jumbo...

she uses the subject's home as the setting for the self portrait to reveal even more about that person.  kind of like the landscape idea i suppose...

here are some interesting events happening in a world near you!

bamboozle! this article is about the awesomeness of bamboo... It’s a significant carbon sink(which for those of you who are not up to date with your environmental lingo is a natural or man made reservoir that accumulates and stores some carbon containing chemical compound for an indefinite period.) , it grows fast, is more termite-resistant than timber, and can be used for everything from food, to clothing material to scaffolding for building construction. Why the heck wasn't this though of earlier??

at first i thought... "clothing material??" so i looked it up, and this is what i found: Fibers from bamboo can be used to make soft yarns and fabric that have natural anti-bacterial properties. Bamboo yarn is perfect for many knit products and is found throughout the world. sweet action!

cut costs on fighting crime?? whaaa??

this article in the new york times this morning made me a little skeptical of the sanity of our nation...

an eye for an eye... and if they don't spend the money there they will just find somewhere else to use it... so is it really worth it??  

flight of the whooping cranes...

Here is an interesting story that I came across as I was scanning the New York Times this afternoon... It is a very long article so I am just going to give you the link, but here is a short summary:

Operation Migration has been one of several organizations collectively trying to bring whooping cranes back to the eastern part of the continent. The whooping crane is reclusive and headstrong — it demands a square mile around its nest to itself — and consequently was one of the first birds to suffer as humans crowded into North America.  Whooping cranes learn the pattern of their migration from other whooping cranes, so this past winter Operation Migration took action.  They gathered 14 juvenile whooping cranes in Wisconsin and led them to their winter nesting ground down in Florida.  The amazing story is how they did it.  A pilot from Operation Migration is chosen to lead the whooping cranes to their nesting ground in a small single passenger plane, that is marked and colored like a whooping crane. (like seen in the picture)  It is truly remarkable!!

Rock Climbing Competition!

Hey all you crazy kids!! Tomorrow night there will be a climbing contest at the rock wall... which is in the rec center for those of you who are unaware... it's going to be FREE and there will be PRIZES!! so i should see all your wonderful faces there :)

AND if you're not that into climbing... it will be a great opportunity to shoot some action shots... or get some rockin' portraits of some pretty awesome strangers...

It starts at 7:00 p.m!!

Too close to home...

as i was searching through the new york times for an interesting article this afternoon i came upon this one:

Killing Stirs Racial Unease in Texas

this took place paris, which is not to far from us here in the merce.  what i find more sad than this story is that whenever texas, or the south in general, is written about in national newspapers or magazines, it is more often than not a story with a negative ending.  very rarely do people get to see the optimistic, happy things that go on in the south... but i guess that is just the news in general... drugs, death, and sex is what sells... 

i think someone should come out with a newspaper where all the stories are of the positive nature... then i might actually watch the news or subscribe to a newspaper...
